BEACON ANALYTICS AT MARITIME MUSEUM

Challenge

The Australian Maritime Museum is Australia’s national centre for maritime collections, exhibitions, research and archaeology. The museum welcomes over 520,000 visitors annually including families and interstate and international tourists. While the museum can monitor and respond to the engagement levels with their website, understanding engagement in the real world museum spaces is difficult and time consuming.
The museum needed a definitive presentation of real world analytics to help them better manage exhibit space and audience engagement. However, the impact to visitors needed to be minimal and barriers like downloading apps or being reliant on mobile devices was not viable.

Response

Nomad developed a unique monitoring solution utilising the existing storage locker service on site. When storing bags in the complimentary lockers on site, visitors receive a key. Nomad added a small Bluetooth Beacon as a key ring. Museum staff advised people that the key ring would contribute to anonuymous analytics of exhibit engagement to help improve the museum.
iPods were placed in key measuring locations to detect the Beacon key rings and sent live data via wifi to an analytics dashboard for review and reporting online.

Results

The simplicity of the solution meant minimal impact on visitors and off the shelf technology placement for museum staff. Importantly, the solution was robust enough to capture analytics ongoing with minimal servicing. Musem staff could monitor analytics through a familiar Google analytics style interface and easily share and collaborate with data.
