CANON SUN STUDIOS – OCULUS VR SOLUTION

Challenge

The photography market in Australia has undergone a radical transformation in recent years as digitisation has driven the pace of change from product to experience economy. The usability and quality of Digital SLRs has enfranchised a growing pool of semi-professionals at one of the market, whilst ‘smart-phonography’ and Go-Pro’s have broadened the everyday, everywhere reach of imaging at the other end. Against this backdrop of change, Canon Australia acquired SUNSTUDIOS (the largest professional photography studios in the southern hemisphere) in 2014. Our group partner How to Impact had completed rounds of prototyping and business model design for the development of a new business space within SUNSTUDIOS. To aid exploration and stakeholder buy in for future development, the team needed a solution to immerse users into the space.

Response

Working with H2i team, Nomad explored the existing design assets to identify opportunities for deeper engagement. We continued with exploration of the architecture files and adapted these to work within a Unity environment to present a 3D space that users could navigate with keyboard controls. We evolved this solution further to function as an Oculus Rift application, utilising the Oculus developer kit.

Results

The final solution allowed client stakeholders to navigate a proposed space and explore the physical presentation of H2i’s proposed business model and design recommendation. The immersion that the Oculus software provided meant stakeholders were empowered to collaborate and make decisions within the settings of an innovative business model
